G158 | Talk about ending on a high note!

AP Photo/Elaine Thompson

M's 7 | A's 0

Now THAT is the Brandon we all knew existed...
Gone was the self-doubt replaced by confidence in abundance!

To record ONE hit and NINE strikeouts through SEVEN innings against one of the hottest September lineups was truly fabulous! And, to do it with less than 80 pitches and NO walks was simply icing on the cake. Brandon did allow a couple walks in the 8th, but was able to work out of trouble without incurring any damage and turn it over to Shawn, who kept the shutout in tact.

I'm hopeful that Brandon's direction (from himself and from the team) is more definitely defined now. No more 'flip-floppin' ... If that is the case, seems that this type of performance may be more the norm than what we saw earlier in the season - when he wasn't truly physically ready and mentally/emotionally conflicted for whatever reason.

other notes...
~ Junior hit his 629th career home run (another 3-run shot)
~ Adam Moore (who was 4 years old when Jr hit his first) hit his first major league homer :-)

G157 | Felix at less than his best is better than most all others...

AP Photo/Elaine Thompson

M's 6 | A's 4

Felix wasn't at his best to be sure...
but Junior (with his 3-run homer in the 5th) and Mark Lowe (relieving Felix in the 8th with the bases loaded and two outs and getting a strikeout) were able to help ensure team victory and add to Felix's CY Award candidacy.

And, getting to .500 was no small feat for this team of 101-losses last year...
"It means a lot. ... Winning 81 games is pretty good for this team," Hernandez said. "It's way different. In the clubhouse and on the field it feels different. Last year it was kind of quiet. This year we just have fun."

G156 | For Snowman, eight is too much....

M's 4 | Blue Jays 5

Things were looking good early - mid...
as the M's touched up Tallet for three solo shots in the 5th inning (including Tui's first big leaue homer!) and "Snowman" had given up only two hits and no runs through six.

Things began to unravel a bit in the 7th...
after a single, a double a sac-fly and another single, the Jays were within one run.

Mikey to the rescue...
hit a solo shot in the 8th to take the 4-2 lead.

But then in the bottom of the 8th things got ugly... Ryan loaded the bases with no outs. Miggy came in and struck out the first two batters, but a siingle and a double later, the Jays took the lead (and the series) for good.

Oh well, at least the Jays' fans enjoyed their last weekend of baseball in Toronto :-)

G155 | a day of "firsts"

AP Photo/The Canadian Press, Fred Thornhill

M's 4 | Blue Jays 5

~ Ian Snell's first career error
~ Adam Moore's first career RBI
~ M's first 2009 ejection (by a player OR coach)
~ Ichiro's first career (including Japan) ejection

Tough luck ND for Ian...
Despite the error (lost the ball in the lights) this was possibly his best start as a Mariner...
6.2IP - 5H - 1ER - 2BB - 7K

This one's on the offense...
Loaded the bases with less than 2 out in THREE consecutive innings and got all of ONE run
10 LOB - yuck :-(

Here's to the series split tomorrow (and a guarantee of at least a 500 season)

G154 | "Doc - tored"

AP Photo/The Canadian Press,Fred Thornhill

M's 0 | Blue Jays 5

Despite 4 doubles, the M's couldn't get on the board vs. Halladay...
In what may have been his last start as a Jay in Rodgers Centre, he certainly gave the fans something to remember - a 7 hit complete game shutout

Encouraging though, that for the first 5 innings, Doug was matching him pretty well...
in fact, Mr. Fister had a perfect game through 5, then gave up a single and then Hill homered for the Jays first 2 runs and it went downhill from there.

G153 | another step closer to Cy possibility

AP Photo/The Canadian Press, Darren Calabrese

M's 5 | Blue Jays 4

Felix was dealing today...
continuing to prove that he's not just the M's #1 starter - he is their ACE.

He made a couple of mistakes...
(and Adrian made one HUGE one behind him)
but, the 11 K's and only 3 ER's over 8 innings were good enough for his 17th victory (with a little help from the DA, who earned his 36th save) and to really make his case for the CY (more on that in anther post).

the offense was a bit "jeckel and hydish"....
~ 13 hits, including a "team cycle" (2B Jose, 3B Josh, HR Guti)
~ and Tui's first RBI (sac fly)
~ but 4 GDIP?!?!

G152 | oh those base on balls....

M's 4 | Rays 5

Five Rays got a free pass.

Only three of them were issued by Brandon...
(which is pretty good for him) it's just that two of them came to the first two batters in the bottom of the 6th, just when it seemed like he might get over that "fifth inning hump".

The other two were issued by Mark...
(who I was surprised to hear come into the game - after the long flight yesterday and a 27 pitch save last night) along with a FC and a couple of singles and before you know it the Rays had a one-run lead in a game that the M's once had a 4-0 advantage.

Tomorrow is Felix Day...
so hopefully the bullpen will get a much needed rest from their long flight and two games of much too much work.

Nice to see "Condor" (Michael Saunders) in there...
3 for 3 (including a triple!) and a stolen base (double steal w/Ichiro)

G151 | The Ichiro-Jose Show

AP Photo/Chris O'Meara

M's 4 | Rays 3

Of course, after I dub him "Snowman" for his propensity to go 8 innings....
Ryan has a bit of a struggle and is unable to get out of the 6th inning.
He allowed 4 walks and 3 runs in total, but he did do a pretty good Hudini impression in the 2nd - after loading the bases with 1 out, he was able to induce a couple of pop-ups.
Ryan would load the bases again in the 6th - this time with NO outs. Shawn came in and allowed 2 runs that tied the game, but could have been a lot worse. From that point on Miggy and Mark nailed it down.

Yet again, the bats come through J U S T enough...
M's pick up their 32nd one-run victory
~ Ichiro a 2-run homer in the 5th
~ Jose with a solo shot in the 8th (gave the M's the lead they wouldn't relinquish)

And then there is that little matter of the jerk fan who caught Jose's home run....
It was his 25th (17 was his previous season high) and he wanted the ball.
Apparently, efforts to negotiate for it (autographed bat, ball, etc.) were in vain.

Someone should have that guy read Baker's piece in the times (linked in my previous post)
Maybe THEN he'd get a heart.

Cried my mascara off this morning....

.
JACOB DE GOLISH / GETTY IMAGES
I read the Seattle Times everyday during my morning commute via the link-light rail. I wasn't quite prepared for the story I found on the front page of the sports section - definitely needed tissue I didn't have!

It was all about Jose and the promise he made at his sister's funeral - that he would hit 20 home runs this season in her honor.

Being an only child, I can't imagine what it must be like to lose a sibling - and Jose has now lost two. His brother died in an auto accident during the season last year and, unfortunately, he wasn't able to get there for the funeral.

I knew that he had lost his sister to cancer earlier this season. I remember when he left the team to go to the funeral and be with his family in Venezuela (at about the same time Rob lost his mother-in-law and Russell lost his grandfather). What I didn't know was how very close he was to his sister. From the article, it sounds as if she was more like a mother to him during his childhood and a best friend in adulthood.

In any case, it was a very moving story...
I'm so glad he can take comfort in the fact that he's honored his sister's memory by working hard and having a fabulous season.

Here's to many more, Jose!!

G150 | Series win ... always sweet vs. da yanks

AP Photo/Ted S. Warren

M's 7 | Yankees 1

It's always great to beat the Yankees, no matter the time or circumstance of the season.

But, here are some things that made this one a little extra-special....

~ Alex, Johnny and Hideki were a combined 0 for 10
~ The Yanks clubhouse champagne was left corked (they will have to celebrate their playoff clinch somewhere else)
~ And, last but not least, Mariner Central was representin' :-)

Thanks, Lonnie!
It was great to finally meet you and some of the gang!

G149 | CC shows his Cy stuff

M's 1 | Yankees 10

Well, this isn't the Mister Fister we have come to know and love, or at least like...
The last time he faced the Yanks, it ended in a 10-3 victory. Such is the life of a young pitcher - obviously the Yanks, having seen him just last month, made adjustments - he will have to learn to do the same.

Suffice it to say, it wasn't too fun to be at...
(especially compared to the thrilling 9th inning victory the night before)
The bats couldn't get anything going vs. CC and the arms were pretty out of sync individually and as a whole.

Still a chance for the series win tomorrow...
and the possibility to keep the Yanks from clinching a playoff berth on our turf.

AP Photo/Ted S. Warren

G148 | Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!

AP Photo/Ted S. Warren

M's 3 | Yankees 2

No one wanted to leave - this was FUN :-)

Ichiro's getting pretty good with this "walk-off" deal...

After going his first 8 years without a single game-winning hit, he has three so far this season
And, two-in-a-row (which hasn't been accomplished in the majors since 2006).
After getting picked off 1B (not once, but twice!) you just KNEW Ichi was going to do something special.

But, as exciting as the homer was...

(and believe me, it was a NO DOUBTER)
it would have only sent the game into extras on it's own. HUGE KUDOS to Mike Sweeney for the 2-out double of Mo.

And, as thrilling as all THAT was, it would have never gotten that far if it hadn't been for Felix...
He's had more dominant nights, but this IS the Yanks after all.
A complete game, giving up only 1 earned run and 1 walk while striking out 3 ain't too shabby.

One step closer to Cy contention...

AP Photo/Ted S. Warren
not sure I've ever seen a bigger smile on Ichiro's face...

G147 | They are having fun again...

AP Photo/Ted S. Warren

M's 4 | White Sox 3 (14)

What is is about the M's and WS?
Today was the 2nd 14-inning game they played each other this season...
and the M's pulled it out both times :-)

Jose and Bill both going deep to tie the game in the 9th = great

Brandon's first start at home, including 6 walks and 3 runs in 5 innings = not so great

The bullpen's 8.2 innings of shutout ball = fantastic
Oh, and what a way for Adam Moore to make his big league debut (catching nearly every arm down in the 'pen ;-)

Ichiro's game winning hit and the celebration that ensued
= priceless

G146 | Shall we call him "Snowman"?

Mariners 4 | White Sox 1
Much has been made about Ryan's hyphenated last name...

He even goes by "hyphen 18" on twitter. I think, in reference and reverence to his propensity to go 8 innings (3 of his last 4 starts have been 8 innings) he should be known as ....

Snowman
:-)

Ryan has done a great job since returning from his rehab in AAA (8 quality starts, to be exact)

"He looked so polished tonight. I'm awfully proud of him," Wakamatsu said. "This is his eighth quality start since he's been back. He's learning a knack to get deeper and deeper into ballgames. I'm awfully excited about him now and in the future."

"Tonight was good because I felt like I got stronger as the game went on," said Rowland-Smith, whose ERA fall to 3.59. "I was making better pitches. The quality of the pitches was better."

AP Photo/John Froschauer

Nice to see David back in the swing...
he hadn't pitched since the 2nd - but didn't appear too rusty as he earned his 35th save

Congrats to Mike Carp,,,
he hit his first major league home run (NY Vinnie has dubbed him "the Big Fish")

G145 | Ian decent ~ bullpen gassed....

M's 3 | White Sox 6

Nice to see a good performance by Ian going a full six and only allowing two runs.

The bats got going early against old friend Freddy, but he managed to get stronger as the game went along and the bullpen basically imploded.

They were due ... been a LONG season.

G144 | Felix shines and Ichiro stars

M's 5 | Rangers 0

Felix's fabulous performance vs. the Rangers in their home ballpark was outshown by Ichiro's major league record of nine consecutive 200 hit seasons.

Both greatly contributed to the M's victory in game 2 of the double-header and consequently the series win in Arlington (which happens rather seldomly).

AP

G143 | rough go for arms and bats....

M's 2 | Rangers 7

Mr. Fister wasn't his usual hittable self and Jason wasn't sharp either. Those facts combined with listless bats and a great job by Tommy Hunter proved to be too tall an order for the M's in the 1st game of the double-header.

G142 | Get a roof!

AP

M's 8 | Rangers 3

Brandon was far from sharp...
but then after sitting around all day yesterday, wondering and waiting in the rain, it is not too surprising. At least he kept it close and the bats were able to add on ... and on.... and on

15 hits in all, including 4 doubles...
and a homer from Ichiro (couple hits closer to 200 for nine in-a-row)

bullpen was their usual stellar self...
with the exception of Randy in the 9th, but since the game was called (FINALLY!) due to the weather, it mattered not.

G141 | "Lackied"

AP

M's 0 | Angels 3

Another great outing for Hyphen....
7 innings and only 3 runs and 1 walk with 5 strikeouts

But all for naught, as Lackey tosses a 5-hit shutout....
M's hit 3 doubles, and play some great D, but cannot capitalize

G140 | season series all tied-up (9 apiece)

Getty Images

M's 3 | Angels 6

In the bottom of the first, things looked pretty bleak...
as Ian allowed 2 singles, 2 walks and a double for a total of 4 earned runs - while throwing 34 pitches. But, it was a bit encouraging that he kept the damage right there through the next 5 innings, scattering a few more walks and a few more singles and having a couple nice DP's turned behind him.

Unfortunately, the hitters weren't able to help much...
they were gettin' 'em on ok, just not gettin' 'em in and the 9 hits equated to only 3 runs

At least the bullpen got some rest...

as Jason came in and cruised through the 7th.
Then in the 8th, allowed a lead-off double, retired the next 2 batters and then gave up a homer to put the Halos up by 4

And man, is Jose havin' a season...

3 more hits, including a solo shot (career high 23 for the season)

G139 | a bit o' everything....

AP Photo/Chris Carlson

M's 2 | Angels 3 (10)

Guti gets the M's the early lead...
with a solo shot in the 1st

Felix in a groove until the 3rd...
Rob got hit where it hurts and needed to catch his breath.
Felix seemed to lose focus after that, walking three batters in that inning, but ended up yielding only one run.
He settled down and got through the 7th

Some awesome "D", but also a costly error in the 5th...
Jack muffs one and the Halos score the go-ahead run

Mikey and Mark keep hope alive!!!
~ Mike hits one out to tie it in the 9th
~ Mark gets through the bottom of the inning to send it to the 10th

Miggy...
single, sac, ground out, IBB, single, run scores, game over.

Future looking bright | Rainiers head to PCL Post Season!

Rainiers clinch the PCL Pacific North Division by beating Colorado Springs Sky Sox 11-2...

It is the first time the Rainiers have made the playoffs since 2005 and the 11th time a Tacoma team has proceeded to the postseason in its 50 year history.

This years run to the playoff was one of the most dramatic pennant races in Tacoma baseball history. In July the team was as far back as 10 games out of 1st place. As recently as August 22nd the Rainiers were 7.5 games back in the division standings but 17 days later, which included a nine-game win streak, the Rainiers are Division Champions.

The Rainiers will now take on defending Triple-A Champion Sacramento River Cats in the Pacific Conference Championship that will begin on Wednesday.

Mariner Matters | 9.7

Brandon to take Luke's spot in the rotation and Sean appears down for the count...

Morrow, who started Sunday for Tacoma, will join the Mariners in Anaheim this week and slide into the rotation in French’s spot.
French, acquired in the deal that sent Jarrod Washburn to Detroit, has gone 3-3 with a 6.38 earned run average since joining Seattle. Opposing hitters are batting .331 against him.
In 22 games with Seattle this year, six of them starts, Morrow has an 0-4 record with six saves and a 5.28 ERA. In 10 starts for Tacoma, he went 5-3 with a 3.60 ERA. He pitched 55 innings, including a four-inning start Sunday, and struck out 40 with 23 walks. His one complete game was a four-hit shutout of Iowa on Aug. 14.
If he pitches every fifth game the rest of the way, Morrow would get four starts and the Mariners would get the chance to evaluate the right-hander.
White, who went from non-roster invitee to spring training to one of the team’s most reliable setup men, took his ailing right shoulder back to Seattle on Sunday and will see team doctors today. He is almost certainly done for the season, and if he needs surgery, he may be unavailable for the start of next season.
:::
White, 28, made spring adjustments to his delivery at the suggestion of pitching coach Rick Adair, and enjoyed the best season of his professional career.
“If you could promise me the same season next year he’s given us this year, I’d take it in a heartbeat,” Wakamatsu said. “That’s how special his year has been.”

Wak on Ichiro's milestone...

"It's such a feat," Wakamatsu said of the 2,000-hit milestone and others within sight. "And just his ability to play every day over the years and make the adjustment from Japanese baseball to here as well as anybody is maybe going to. He's just a special player and I know many guys in that dugout feel the same way."
For Wakamatsu, what stands out is Ichiro's ability to keep collecting hits even without drawing walks. Back in 2001, a big concern mentioned often by present and former players, managers and, yes, the media, was that Ichiro would never maintain the hits needed to keep his on-base percentage where a good leadoff hitter should.
And yet, nine seasons later, his lifetime OBP of .378 would put him near the upper echelon of this year's best AL leadoff men — where five players, Ichiro included, are positioned between .380 and .401 (Ichiro is at .392).
Maintaining numbers like those over a prolonged period is something few hitters, power or otherwise, have done. And while the debate rages about Hall of Fame guideposts like 500 career home runs, in light of steroids revelations, the sanctity of a 3,000-hit career remains intact.
Ichiro will reach his 3,000th hit by the 2014 season at age 40 if he continues on this current pace.
"It's just his versatility," Wakamatsu said. "Like I said, he can hit home runs now and then, he can go to all fields and he can get a lot of infield hits. He puts a lot of pressure on an opposing team."
And that pressure has continued this year, with his 54 infield singles being Ichiro's second-highest total since 63 in 2001. And that's come at a time when his slugging percentage of .463 is the highest he has ever posted.

Wak's big catch

.

KEITH ROBBINS / A TAIL SPOT SALMON GUIDE SERVICE

Wak landed a a 17.2 lb king salmon in Puget Sound last Monday...
"I caught a flounder and a bullhead," said Wakamatsu, who was using a light six weight rod. "A half an hour later, I was casting, and ended up catching that king on a red-and-white clouser fly.

"It pulled a lot harder than that bullhead. To hook that thing and watch it come out of the water. This [fish] was taking my line out, and it took me almost to the end of the backing. One more run and it would have taken my fly line with him.

"I have been fishing a lot in the Sound, and didn't know that [catching a king this summer] was such a rarity at the time."

It took him 15 minutes to land the hatchery king that weighed 17.2 pounds.

"That was the biggest king I've heard of caught off the beach in Puget Sound on a fly," Robbins said. "It was just unbelievable to catch a king that big. He [Wakamatsu] was totally stoked.

G138 | Ichi-20000, Fister Blister and Kelley oops!

M's 2 | A's 5

It started so well...
Ichiro's 2000th hit of his major league career was a no-doubter double, Guti bunted him to third and Lopey drove him in with a solid single.

but it was all downhill from there...

Doug wasn't as sharp as he was vs. the Yanks and Halos, walking the lead-off batter, then allowing a single. None scored in that inning, but it would prove to be a bit of an omen for his outing as he had runners on base in every inning but one. He was able to escape a bases-loaded, one out situation in the 5th (which would be his last inning due to the blister he developed in the 3rd) to limit the overall damage to one run (as solo shot in the 4th)

Shawn retired batters in order in the 6th, but...
the wheels fell off in the 7th when he loaded the bases without an out, was able to induce a strikeout to Sweeney, but then Hairston (who fouled out in the same situation in the 4th) did the granny damage.

And that was all she wrote.

G137 | third time's the charm for A's

AP Photo/Ben Margot

M's 5 | A's 9

I'm a bit under the weather (and it appears the M's may be as well...)

Good = getting to Anderson in the 2nd inning
Bad = Luke failing to throw strikes with a lead and allowing 4 runs
Ugly = Miguel in the 8th

G136 | Rockin' Rowland-Smith

M's 6 | A's 3

Just a little bit of everything in this one...
~ clutch hitting (all but one of the six runs were w/two outs)

~ sac-flys to doubles to home runs

~ hits all throughout the lineup ~ RBI's at the top and bottom
~ and GREAT defense!

RRS really coming into his own...
He wasn't real sharp early, but settled down and retired 11-in-a-row at one point. And, after the single and then the homer in the 7th he retired 6-in-a-row, getting through the 8th.

With the D.A. on the shelf...

due to a few too many cases lately, Mark closed the door on this one for his 2nd save.

G135 | M's vs. A's in OAK, Seahawks vs. Raiders in SEA

AP Photo/Jeff Chiu

M's 7 | A's 4

Didn't get to pay much attention to this one...
I was at Qwest Field where the Seahawks were playing the Raiders in the last pre-season game (Hawks won, btw - 31-21).

I listened here and there to the M's/A's on the radio (when the offense was on the field ;-)

the pitching wasn't exactly stellar, but good enough...

~ Ian had a bit of a rough go, but managed to hang in long enough to get the victory

(he really needs to learn how to be more efficient...)
~ Jak came in and provided his requisite long relief
~ Mark allowed a solo shot ~ David recorded his 34th save

the offense was fairly proficient...

~ runs, hits and RBI all up and down the lineup

the defense wasn't too sharp...

~ one DP but 2 errors

G134 | Happy Felix Day, indeed!

.

AP Photo/John Froschauer

M's 3 | Angels 0

What a nice belated anniversary gift ~ a Mariners win over the Halos!

't was all about Felix...
8IP - 4H - 3BB - 0ER - 6K

but Bill Hall sure trying to prove his worth...

(looking more and more like Mark McLemore everyday ;-)
with a double, an RBI, a stolen base and a run scored

And David earned his 33 save...

with a fairly rare 1-2-3 9th

Gotta love Felix's emotion...

And the fact that he can throw successfully toward places other than home plate...

G133 | and they call him Mister Fister

M's 2 | Angels 1

That's the way you script it...
~ 7+ from your starter
~ solid setup
~ shut the door closer (okay, sometimes he leaves a little crack, but more often than not it gets shut tight in the end)

Whoda thunk that Doug Fister...
who has lost to both the Tribe and the Royals ~ would be able to do what he did in his wins against the Yanks and now the Halos. Maybe he's just one of those guys who plays to the level of his competition. Or maybe, he's just really learning how to pitch ... on the job.

The offense is still frustrating to say the least...
but for the 29th time they had
J U S T enough (29-16 in one-run games)

The defense was nice tonight...
including 2 DP's and a caught stealing.
