Mariners 5 | Rangers 12
I was trying to listen here and there but...
the noise at Century Link was overwhelming my radio :-)
On a day where the M's score 5 runs on 4 home runs...
You'd expect that they would come away with a win.
Problem is, the Rangers scored 12...
The M's used FIVE pitchers and they ALL gave up runs (Furbush and Ruffin with the worst of the damage)
There were also a couple of errors, seems best just to turn the page on this one.

g64 | extra bases growing on trees!
Mariners 3 | Tigers 2
Well, slightly different lineup tonight, as in...
No Ichiro for the first time since August 31, 2009 (255 games) and Chone Figgins leading off for the first time ever in a Mariner uniform. I wasn't surprised to see Carlos Peguero and Greg Halman in the lineup at the same time (w/Ichiro out) but I was a bit surprised at their places in the field - thought Carlos would be in left and Greg in right instead of the reverse. Also thought that Carp might be in again but, it was Cust at DH instead.
How did it go?
Great!
Not saying it was the line up shuffle that did the trick...
(some pretty fancy pitching had a lot to do with it) but, Figgy did collect TWO hits (a double and a single) but didn't score. The M's had NINE total hits and SEVEN were for extra bases - TWO homers (Justin and Piggy), ONE triple (Piggy) and FOUR doubles (Guti, Figgy and Adam-2). The RBI's were collected by Justin, Piggy and Chris.
About that pitching...
Erik didn't go long, but he did go good ('cept for the walks) 5IP - 3H - 2ER - 3BB - 6K
Then the "budget pen" came in and shut.the.door. Chris, David and Brandon combined for FOUR shutout innings, giving up only TWO hits, NO walks and striking out FIVE. Brandon with his 18th save.
Wedge Words...
"Warrior effort by the bullpen."
Bonus Baseball...
I was given some tix for the M's / Halos next Tuesday at (I had been going to exchange one of my tickets but, now I don't have too!).
I missed out on the season ticket holders half-price offer for the Marlins "home games" later this month but, I did order a ticket at regular price for the Friday night game of that series. It should be fun sto see the M's wearing gray at home and their pitchers swinging a bat at The Safe!

g47 | so many turning points, it went 360
Mariners 8 | Twins 7
Seems there were two precursors in the first inning...
~ a good one in the top of the inning - Jack's first JACK!!! (with Ichiro aboard)
~ a bad one in the bottom of the inning - Jason gives up a lead-off homer
That would be just the beginning of a see-saw evening at Target Field....
The M's own the first three innings by scoring four total runs, the Twins own the middle innings when Jason finally stumbled and gave up four of his own and then the M's would rally long and hard to get the win in ten innings.
Lots of heros tonight..
Among which I include Jason, as he hung around in the dugout, pulling for his teammates - and with good reason. This was a TRUE TEAM WIN. Literally EVERYONE contributed - each player, including pinch-runners and pinch hitters, did something to help get to ultimate victory - hit, RBI, walk, score, stolen base. There was everything from Jack's homer, to RBI doubles by Guit and Gimenez, to singles, great base-running and productive outs in the 8th, to a "money bag" by Michael pinch-running for Justin, to a clutch RBI single by Piggy in the 9th to tie the game, to more singles and an Ichiro sac bunt, to Luis's sac fly RBI that would prove to be the winning run.
And, let's not forget the bullpen...
Aaron got five ground outs in-a-row, after taking over for Jason with two outs in the 5th, before giving up an infield single and then a homer to Thome. Ray and Wright each pitched a scoreless inning and then Brandon came in and threw a perfect 10th for the save.
Every win is great...
But an extra-inning victory, on the road, with everyone contributing is truly something special. I wouldn't be surprised if this one goes a long way in defining the character of this team.

g18 | Mr Fister gets some run support!
Mariners 13 | Tigers 3
On a night when the team plays with a heavy heart in support of teammate Justin Smoak....
Prior to the game, Justin was placed on the bereavement list in order to fly home to North Carolina and be with his family as his father was gravely ill (diagnosed with lung cancer several months ago). Unfortunately, late in the game, we found out that his father had indeed passed away.
on the mound
Mr. Fister was cool as a cucumber (110P - 6.1 IP - 6H - 2ER - 2BB - 7K), the bats were smokin' hot and the combination added up to VICTORY (for pitcher and team)!
By the way, the M's scored exactly ONE run in each of Doug's previous THREE starts
Jamie Wright entered the game in the 7th inning...
with the bases loaded and one out. He threw ONE pitch and got EXACTLY what he wanted ....
a 4-6-3 double play.
Aaron Laffey had mop up duty...
He allowed a run on four hits and a couple of walks but, considering the score was 11-2 at the point he entered the game, that was focused enough.
at the plate
Where to begin?!?
Every starter but two (Jack and Brendon) had as least ONE hit...
M's lead the majors with 79 (next closest, Boston with 67 - league average is 52)
of base paths and leather works
he was absolutely giddy in his interview after the game [paraphrased] "Nice to play with a lead for a change. Have we scored in the first inning yet? How many'd we get. 2? 4!?! Love Fisty's intensity, his passion and energy, love playing behind him. He's always picking you up in the dugout, whether he's pitching or not."
As for not getting one of the 15 hits ...
'Well, I sped up the game, gotta move it along.'
;-)
