Now, THIS one I'm glad I missed :-(
I did say to myself going into the series, "Baby steps, just win the series."
And, they did.
But this one hurt. The offense finally came alive, scoring in each of the first three innings and adding on in the sixth, all the while, Garrett (of all starters) kept the Halos at bay and then it all unraveled in the late innings. There was still hope to the end, but over-worked closers eventually tend to give up runs. It was David's first blown save this season and the first earned run he'd allowed in 14 IP (since May 2nd).

Back to The Safe to take on the O's and the Twins before Interleague play begins.

Wow - sorry to have missed THIS one! We were having dinner at Salty's on Alki (a perfect ending to our "Seattle Tourists" day) and I was periodically checking the score on my BlackBerry and was very excited to see the ninth inning rally and eventual 10th inning victory. I was looking forward to seeing the highlights on ESPN once we got back to the hotel. Unfortunately, they didn't even mention the score, let alone show highlights... ('t was all about basketball and hockey ;-(

Rosy | OOO

I'm headed downtown for the weekend with my BFF!

Her birthday was yesterday and my gift to her is for us to be Seattle Tourists for the weekend.
Today, we are going to check into a downtown hotel, have lunch at the market, ride the monorail, go up in the Needle and maybe even ride the Duck!. Tomorrow, we have appointments for facials with my daughter (who works at the spa in the hotel we are staying at)

Don't know how we lucked out with the weather ...
it's absolutely GORGEOUS ... and is supposed to be in the mid-70s for several days!

It's REALLY nice to see ~ especially vs. a division rival!

STELLAR starting performance (yay - Jason!)
+
TIMELY hitting (for a CHANGE!) from homers to bunts to sac flies...
+
SOLID defense (who cares about Brandon's little boo-boo - he made up for it with his offense and helping turn 2 DPs)
+
SHUTDOWN bullpen (Sean and the D.A.)

Gotta give props to Juan Rivera ...
he absolutely ROBBED Russell of a homer in the 8th inning.

The very next batter, Jose, on a two ball count, hit it to the VERY same spot and Juan ALMOST did it AGAIN!

Thank heaven's ALMOST only counts in horseshoes :-)

::::::::::

Dear Wak ~
Please find a way to keep 'em rolling and to inspire confidence in their competence. They may not be World Series bound (at least not THIS year) but if they play like they did last night, they can at least make the ALW an interesting divisional race right up to September.

G48 | No bristles for you!

.

M's 6 | A's 1

It's feast or famine with these guys...

they had scored 13 runs in their past 7 games and then put up a 6-spot today
AND
the pitching was S-O-L-I-D

bright spots...
~ EriK went 6.2 innings of 5-hit ball only allowing a solo shot
he threw a few too many pitches (108) and walked 2 but, for a change, neither scored
~ Sean and David were great in their NO-hit NO-walk 2.1IP of combined relief (efficient too - each only threw 11 pitches)
~ and whadayaknow, there were some productive bats today - including SIX extra base hits!
Rob with 2 doubles, Franklin and Ichi each with one...

AP Photo/Marcio Jose Sanchez

Endy with a triple and Russell with his 11th homer...

AP Photo/Marcio Jose Sanchez

Ichiro also extended his hitting streak to 21 and added his 8th SB (he was also CS)

AP Photo/Marcio Jose Sanchez

I wasn't able to listen/watch the game, so I won't even go looking for any "bleak peeks" ...
These guys need all the positive vibes they can get. Here's hoping they enjoy their off-day in sunny southern Cali and come out firing on all cylinders this weekend at the Big A.

AP Photo/Ben Margot

M's 3 | A's 4

My fingers are sore from that slamming door :-(

Poor Jarrod. I didn't see either of the two games in Texas where Brandon blew the saves, but I would have to think, as gut-punches gut go, this one ranks right up there. To me, it hurts more to lose like this even more so than the exasperation of the offensive drought.

Jarrod gutted out 6 scoreless innings (skipped his last start for a bum knee) only to have Miggy and Lowe blow it for him (and more importantly, the team) in the 7th. Granted, if the M's had scored more than 3 runs, it wouldn't have been the difference - but walks are just unacceptable in that situation....

arghhh!

G46 | blech!

.
M's 1 | A's 6

bleak peeks...
~ canNOT walk seven batters and expect to win and 0 fer w/RISP doesn't help either (the few times there were actually RISP)
~ HUGE difference in this game was truly the DEFENSE:
sterling play by the A's and a pathetic performance by the M's
~ Jaku pitches decently vs. the Halos and the BoSox and then sucks (both times) vs. the A's
(granted, ZERO help from his D)

~ Joh w/ a fractured toe :-(

no bright spots for the M's...
But, local boy Travis Buck had himself a day - scoring three runs and robbing AB of a XBH ;-)

Exciting bookends, middle, not so much | Home Highlights

.
BoSox and Halos and Giants, oh my! (5-5)

ROSY RAPTURE

left bookend of the home stand the Sox...
~ great to take 2 of 3 from the Bostons (and I got to see both wins in person!!)
~ whodathunk the the combination of Vargas, Olson and Jaku could hold the Sox to only 11 runs and get two team wins? Way to step up!
~ and talk about shutting the door via the pen ... ZERO runs given up by the bullpen all weekend!
~ game one: Ichi two homers and Yuni two walks - likely never to happen again ;-) ~ game three: 9th inning victories are fun and exciting!

right bookend of the home stand the Giants...
~ game one: best of both worlds, Randy pitches well and gets to pay his respects to the fans, but the M's win
~ game three: Felix was more like Felix (though he had one rough inning) and nice to see Jr. and Adrian's power displays (and Yuni walked twice more!)
~ series win = always good

PALLID PONDERINGS

Halos in the middle...
~ the hitting finally shows up (in the first two games) but then the pitching falls A-part
~ Ichi hits lead off home run in the third game of the series on Wednesday and the M's would not score again (shut out on Thursday) until the bottom of the 6th vs. the Giants on Friday

Only 8 wins so far in the month of May and no back-to-back wins for the entire month.

G45 | FeliKKKKKKKKKK

AP Photo/Kevin P. Casey

M's 5 | Giants 4

bright spots
FELIX! He showed us EXACTLY what we needed to see today...
~ came out strong (allowed only one hit through 4IP) and went long (8IP - desperately needed to rest the BP)

~ the 10 K's restated how dominant he can be
~ bounce back after a bad inning (allowed 3 in the 5th, but came back to 1-2-3 in the 6th)
~ bounce back after a bad pitch (struck out the last batter he faced in the 8th after allowing a solo shot)

THIS is the Felix we know and LOVE and this is definitely the type of outing that he can build upon as he continues to develop and mature into that ACE role.

YUNI! In the "magic two-hole"...

2 more walks! and a nice sac-bunt

XBH!!!

Even though I'm a pitching and defense kinda gal and LOVE small ball, I must say the string of singles in the past several games (for those counting, Ichiro's lead off single on Wed. was the last M's XBH) was gettin' a bit old. Nice to see Jr (match-ups be damned!) and AB go yard and Jose with a double.

Not worrying about "bleak peeks" today...

The home stand ended on a great note on a beautiful day.

Off to OakTown and Anaheim they go...

G44 | slip slidin'

.
M's 1 | Giants 5

M's pitching was NAILS...
Garrett was almost as good tonight as Vargas was last: 6IP - 4H - 0R - 2BB - 4K

Then came the NAIL-biter 7th ...
Miggy loads the bases with NO outs and manages to wiggle out without giving up a run.

Then the NAIL-in-the-coffin 8th...

Mark threw THREE pitches and got TWO out, then the it all fell apart...
maybe due to overwork? :::: single, single, walk, double, homer = 5 runs

Batters still not helping matters...
Another 10 hits ~ all singles

Kudos to Matt Cain and his complete game win.

M's haven't won 2 games in-a-row in the month of May :-(

G43 | Lopey comes through in extries!

.

AP Photo/John Froschauer

M's 2 | Giants 1

The Rainiers lost, but the fireworks were splendid and it was fun to listen to the OH SO close ninth inning rally...
(Grif hit a LONG, LOUD flyball out with the bases loaded) and the M's subsequent extra-inning victory on the radio on the way home.

bright sights...
~ BRILLIANT is a little more apt description for Jason's performance. He gave up the lead-off home run and then proceeded to go seven full innings giving up only one more hit, one walk and striking out seven - yowsa - where did that come from??
~ and the relief was it's usual RADIANT self, posting five innings of one-hit, no-run ball
~ eleven hits (including TWO for Adrian)
~ seven walks (Yes, Virgina, patience is a virtue ;-)

AP Photo/John Froschauer

Okay, it was only the Giants, but hey, gaining confidence in your competence has to start somewhere!
Wak pretty pumped about the pitching...
“I can’t say enough about our pitching,” manager Don Wakamatsu said. “It’s awfully tough when you’re not scoring, the burden you put on your pitching staff. We figured as long as we were still here in the 12th inning, we might as well win it.”

AP Photo/John Froschauer

bleak peeks...
~ ANOTHER error for Yuni :-(
~ base runners galore, but only two runs score

From all accounts, Randy's "exit" was pretty special...
"It was nice to come back here and pitch and pitch well," said Johnson, who had been struggling of late, entering the game with an earned-run average of 6.86. "I needed that personally. And then just to take care of the fans. Because if that's my last start, at least I got an opportunity to walk off the mound here and pay my respects to the fans who have been very good to me over my career here.":::

"I won't close the door or anything," he said. "But it [the ovation] was just nice on their part and I wanted to express my thank you towards them by tipping my hat. I'm obviously very grateful for the opportunity and the years that I had here."

Rosy to the Rainiers!

.

I'm heading down I-5 to catch the Rainiers tonight!
I haven't been to an R's game for several years. It's "Tacoma Public Works Night" and my BFF (who also happens to be a city employee) has tickets to the game. Apparently, there will be fireworks after the game (maybe some during too, you never know with those AAA guys ;-)

I'll have my BlackBerry with me to keep tabs on the action "up north" vs. Randy and the Giants...

Go, M's!

Go, R's!

G42 | so much for the split

.

AP Photo/Elaine Thompson

M's 0 | Angels 3

bright sights...
~ EriK looked pretty good after skipping a turn (hamstring)
though he did take 95 pitches to get through five innings, he only gave up two runs (solo shots) and struck out six, but walked two
~ Brandon looked great! 35 pitches in 2 innings w/3 K's and no hits!
~ Denny took over in the 8th w/2 on, got the out and then came out for a full scoreless inning in the 9th
~ second straight game w/zero errors ;-)
~ Adrian had two hits (snapping that nasty 0 for 22)
~ M's had two SB's (and for the second game in-a-row, the Halos had zero)

bleak peeks...
~ only five hits, all singles
~ shut out for the 4th time (2nd time by the Halos)
~ Wak took the blame for the botched double-steal

M's better eat their wheaties ~ The Big Unit goes tomorrow at The Safe!

G41 | my tummy feels better ... but I still need TUMS!

.

AP Photo/Elaine Thompson

M's 1 | Angels 0

Whew!
Way to go, Jaku and Crew!

Ain't baseball great?
~ First two games of the series at total of 27 runs scored with the M's on the losing end of both.
~ Third game, a one-run Mariner advantage in the first inning holds for the ENTIRE game.
~ Last night, potential ACE Felix struggles in one of his worst starts this season (after being lights out in, of all places, Arlington)
~ Tonight, fill-in Chris Jakubauskus pitches lights out, allowing only 2 hits in 7 IP
~ Santana pitches a fabulous game, in only his 2nd start off the DL, but the M's are able to scrape up JUST enough
~ First two games has sad, sloppy defense
~ Tonight, it was smooth as silk

Yes, they were caught three times,
but but they were successful FIVE times and Wak made no bones about his disappointment...

"Sometimes you've got to ask guys to step up," Wakamatsu
said of Hernandez. "I didn't think he stepped up today."

:::

"A lot of that has to do with how hard we've worked as a
group to try to control the running game," Wakamatsu said. "Anaheim's a good
club and they have some talented players. But it's an embarrassment to allow
them to steal five bags off us."

Seems to me the team takes one step forward (as in the Boston series, getting decent starting pitching, outstanding bullpen efforts and timely hits) and then the offense finally steps up a bit (with 11 runs in the last two games) but the pitching and defense falls apart.

Aside from a really explosive offense, this team HAS shown that it can get it done with small ball and an occasional blast as long as the stellar pitching and at least decent defense shows up.

Here's hoping Wak has some magic to make it all happen at once like it did once upon a time in April.

M's 6 Angels 10

So...
since I haven't been feeling well, I listened to the game on the radio as I dozed in and out of full awareness.
Another game that I'm hoping is not the season in microcosm.

Started out great...
~ Wash was on (retiring the first six batters he faced)
~ loved the three bunts in an inning resulting in two runs - I LOVE small ball!
~ now almost expected, a Russell homer

And it went directly to horrendous...
~ errors and misplays
~ pitching collapse by the starter AND the relievers

Maybe this one was better left unheard :-(

Tonight (though still no quite up to par) I plan to be there in person.

Not feeling well this evening ...
so game day updates may not happen tonight.

I also realized that I forgot to do the "Road Trip Wrap" ...
then again, that last trip was pretty forgettable :-(

G38 | series win at Fenway Northwest!

.

AP Photo/Ted S. Warren

M's 3 Red Sox 2

Whoduthunk with Jaku, Olson and Vargas taking the mound that the M's had a chance of winning one game, let along taking the series!?!

This one was a really fun one to be at, as it had a little of everything...
~ lots a hits (but few runs)
~ some crummy defense and some really awesome defense (on both sides)
~ great pitching all around
~ takin' advantage of a boo-boo and one very timely hit :-)

A really stand-out stat for the homestand so far...
~ the bullpen hasn't surrendered a run

And the stand-out for this particular game...
~ aside from Franklin's walk-off RBI? Gotta be Mark coming in throwing 99+mph and striking out all three batters he faced in the 8th

Here's to the good things from this series carrying over to the next ~ as the Halos come to town for four.

G37 | homer happy Sox

M's 3 | Red Sox 5

Was out of town for the evening...
Looks like, all things considered, that Garrett didn't do too bad and Miggy kept 'em in it.
Only six hits aside - BoSox made more of theirs count.

Saturday, May 16, 2009

Rosy | OOO

.
I'll be out of town for the day/night...

Hopefully, the next update (tomorrow evening) will be reporting a series win.

Rather improbable going in, considering the M's are throwing Olson and Vargas to wrap up the 3-game set vs. the BoSox.
But hey, when Jaku can get the win, Ichi homers TWICE and Yuni walks in back-to-back PA's ...

miracles DO happen!

G36 | HI Sox! M's have HIGH socks

.
M's 5 | Red Sox 4

Yes, 't was the evening of high socks....
Ichiro has always worn his that way and so far, as an M, David has as well. Yuni's usually got the extra long pants, but not tonight. Tonight he was showing the socks (and maybe he should do it more often!). He had been benched the last two games in Texas but came back with a "patient vengence" against the Red Sox.

I believe that Yuni and Ichi could play together for another 10 years and you would never see Ichi w/2 homers and Yuni w/2 walks -in the same game- that was fun! And the other 'high socks' guy gets the save. Way to go!

And then there was Jaku...
Boy, talk about a turn-around on the mound! It appeared that Chris's goose was pretty cooked after only 3 innings (he gave up single runs in the 1st and 2nd and two runs in the 3rd). But, to his credit (and Wak's confidence) he hung in there and ended up getting through six. Lotta pitches, but he got the win.

Strong, effective relief...
The nightmare of the last two 9th innings in Texas are now a distant memory. Nice jobs by Sean and Mark (I'll admit, I was a bit nervous when Mark came in in the 8th with a one run lead - thankfully, I worried for naught).

G35 | spittin' bristles in Texas...

.

M's 2 | Rangers 3

The good news is...
Felix was finally Felix. And, as Shannon finds out, maybe even better.
Felix's velocity being down was game plan. I flat out asked him, why not throw 96-97 to these guys today. Okay, so I set him up a little, but good answer anyway.

"A couple years ago I was a thrower, not a pitcher. Now I am a pitcher. I located all of my pitches today. I don't want to throw 97 in the middle. I just want to go at the corners and throw my two seamers. They have a pretty good line up and you have to locate your pitches. Michael Young is a great hitter, you see that, two hits against me but if you get the other guys out it will be fine."

He struck out Hank Blalock three times, first time change up, second time fastball inside, third fastball away. He said it was a big game for him. I asked what he wanted to do in this game after what happened in Minnesota, he replied, "Pitch. I just want to pitch a great game. I have been struggling for the last two games, I just want to go out there and pitch. Don't just throw the ball, pitch."

Pretty amazing to see what he could do with pretty much just a two seamer and a change, with a couple of okay sliders thrown in. The curve again was MIA.

It's a shame offense was still the offense :-(

Here's hoping that...
we have yet to see the real Brandon this season.
Not that I'm happy about it, but looks like my early trepidation was founded :-(

There are those saying that Brandon is done ...
I'm not buying it. I seem to remember that he performed pretty darn well as a fill-in closer for JJ last season, but had to go refresh my memory on his stats...

Sure enough, he had 10 saves in 12 opportunities with a 1.47ERA as a reliever. His lefty/right splits were nearly identical (except for a few more walks to the lefties and a LOT more K's to the righties). Brandon gave up exactly ZERO runs to the: O's, RedSox, WhiteSox, Tribe, Tigers, BJ's, Mets, Pads and Marlins in nearly 25IP to those teams (and barely gave up any vs, the Yanks, Halos and Rangers in 18.2IP). It was the actual STARTS vs. KC and OAK where his ERA ballooned.

All this to say that...
despite the relatively small sample size, Brandon was tested against some pretty potent lineups last season and, for the most part, passed with flying colors. I think the main problem this season is that he just flat out wasn't ready. He missed a TON of ST time (pitched a grand total of 5 innings) due to shoulder stiffness and should probably have started the season on the DL - as opposed to struggling early, then getting DL's and then coming back without rehab (in the Metrodome and Arlington, of all places).

So, here's to Wak, et al....
figuring out the best way for Brandon to dust off the rust AND regain his confidence ~ without having the game on the line.

Bring on the BoSox!!!

(I'll be at "Fenway Northwest" on Friday and Sunday)

G34 | more than the wind was 'blowing' in Arlington

.
M's 5 | Rangers 6

Wouldn't you know it?

Finally some good signs from the offense...

~ 3 home runs (I know... it's Arlington, but they gotta start somewhere)
~ a RBI double
~ 2 stolen bases
~ taking advantages of miscues by the opposition
~ 2 sacrifices (including Russell's in the 11th that got Beltre to 2nd and he ended up scoring the go-ahead run)

Only to have the pitching struggle...
~ Jarrod was OK - I guess giving up ONLY 4 runs in Texas is not that bad.
But, the fact that two of the four walks he issued came around to score was.
~ David was a bit shaky but he, Sean and Garrett were able to get through nine without giving up any runs.

Closer, stage right...
... and thar she blows!

:-(

Mariner Matters | 5.12

.
Russell seeing the ball better literally...

KEVORK DJANSEZIAN / GETTY IMAGES

This season, Branyan's .289 batting average is roughly 60 points higher than his career total. He still has power; leading the Mariners with seven home runs, seven doubles and an on-base-plus-slugging percentage of .935.

And while he's still prone to strikeouts, he's now fanning once every 3.3 at-bats instead of every 2.5.

"I think it's helped me really pinpoint and focus on the ball," Branyan said. "I see the ball exactly where it is."

Branyan spends 10 minutes a day, usually at home, training his eye muscles by donning special glasses and following a moving set of three-dimensional arrows on his laptop with help from a joystick. He can adjust the arrows' speed and vary programs — dealing with depth perception, tracking, focus and other visual areas — as he becomes more adept at following the images.

"We call it weight training for the eyes," Seiller said. "What we do is, we work on the speed and efficiency of the eye movements. And when you do that, you give the batter more time."

There are two components to Vizual Edge: the training program and an evaluation process that identifies visual strengths and weaknesses.

Zduriencik and the Brewers used both. Zduriencik has introduced Seiller's evaluation program into Mariners scouting, and the team has begun 15-minute eye tests on most amateur prospects being considered for the June draft.

"It helps you identify which players may have gifted vision," Zduriencik said. "And also, if any red flags pop up, you can look into it further to make sure it's not a serious issue that can come back to bite you later."

Congrats on #5000 , Mr. Niehaus!

AP Photo

The man who has been the voice of the franchise since its expansion inception in 1977 called his 5,000th Mariners' game Thursday when Seattle lost to Kansas City 3-1 in Kauffman Stadium.

The Hall of Fame announcer has missed just 90 games over those 33 seasons, not a bad attendance record.

When Niehaus called his first Mariners game in 1977, Jimmy Carter had just replaced Gerald Ford as president. Star Wars was debuting in theaters. The first Apple II computers were just hitting the market.

The Hyphe-ator tosses simulated game...

Rowland-Smith said the best part of the session was "facing hitters, seeing some swings-and-misses and getting ground balls and stuff. You feel like you are actually a baseball player again, not just a cheerleader on the top step of the dugout."

Rowland-Smith has been recovering from triceps tendinitis for more than a month.

He broke camp as the fifth starter and pitched against the Athletics in Oakland on April 10, going 3 1/3 innings. He has been sidelined ever since.

The game plan is for the lefty to throw a bullpen session on Thursday and then begin a short rehab stint at extended spring training in Peoria, Ariz. He would then travel to Triple-A Tacoma for perhaps two starts before returning to the Mariners.

"It could change, but I have it all written down on a calendar," he said. "I'll probably be back [with the Mariners] at the end of the month."

Manager Don Wakamatsu was pleased with Tuesday's workout.

"He has made some adjustments in his mechanics, and I think he has improved," the manager said. "What I was looking for was the reaction of the hitters and his command. I thought he stayed behind the ball well today, and his breaking ball had late break."

G33 | don't tell the M's Texas can't pitch

.

AP Photo/Tony Gutierrez

M's 1 | Rangers 7

Here's hoping this game wasn't the 2009 season in microcosm.

The starter pitches well...
(wouldathunk Vargas could go 5 innings, giving up only one run in Arlington)

Initially, the bullpen bent but didn't break...
(Batista got himself in AND out of trouble with no damage)

The offense did just enough manufacturing to hang in...

(a Franklin single + a stolen base and a Kenji double)

And hope rises ~ only to be dashed.

And then the BP blow-up...
(Mark coughing up SIX runs in the 7th ~ granted the play behind him hurt more than it helped)

And so, blame is aplenty...
~ blech bats
~ rancid relief
~ dingy "D"

Time to step it up.
Here's to salvaging the TEX series and coming home on a high note to face the Halos at The Safe.

G32 | Happy Mother's Day, Birdie :-)

.

AP Photo/Jim Mone

M's 5 | Twins 3

I listened to most of the game via my walk-man while in attendance at the XBox Pitch...
watching the Sounders FC play to a 1-1 draw (
dang refs! ;-) vs. the LA Galaxy.

Erik was a bit off today....

the five free passes he issued were only one fewer than he had allowed so far for the season.
And, largely due to the walks, his pitch count was WAY up there (110) for the only 4.2IP
That said, he kept them in the game (the bullpen surrendered another four walks - yikes!)

But the bats continued to come around...

~ pounding out another 10 hits
~ including 2 home runs (Jr and Jose) and 3 doubles (Jr, Wlad and Endy)

And, I thought I remembered Jr doing well on Mom's Day....
Turns out - I was right :-)
Jr now has seven home runs on the second Sunday in May.
Today's blast tied the game at two in the 8th and the M's went on to score 2 more in the inning.
Adrian said it was Jr's homerun that sparked the team. I don't know how he does it, this was his 7th on Mother's day, he hit his 400th on his father's birthday, I could go on and on about the dramatic homeruns he has hit but the bottom line is, some days are special. Some days he wakes up expecting to hit homeruns. It is a beautiful thing to watch.
Brandon, fresh off the DL, would close it out...
granted, many tums and much malox needed
(ala Kazu-style ;-) but, he got it done!

AP Photo/Jim Mone

Now the guys travel to Texas for an off day prior to a 3-game set with the Rangers at The Ballpark in Arlington.

From the diamond to the pitch of a different sort....

.
My husband and son have season tix to the Seattle Sounders FC.
I have tried without success several times to get tickets, but am always too late (SOLD OUT!).

Normally, they play on Saturday nights, but are playing today at noon...
Imagine my delight when I opened my Mother's Day card and found two tix to the game!
My husband had surrendered his ticket and my son and I are leaving for the XBox Pitch soon.

Here's to EriK shutting down M&M and the rest of the Twins today...
and here's to Jr. with a pink bat (I seem to remember he usually does well on Mom's Day ;-) and the end of this losing streak!

Go Mariners!

Go Sounders FC!

How cute is that?!?

.
Hey, when the team is struggling, time for a little fluff

(or "Fluffy", as the case may be ;-)

Shannon has a blurb on her blog about the newest spokesman for the Humane Society.

Carlos ... can he figure it out?

G31 | well, at least they scored 6 runs...

.
M's 6 | Twins 9

Baby steps...
~ the six runs today was two more than they scored in the past four games combined
~ Adrian FINALLY hit his first homer (and was 3/4)
~ Miggy and David looking okay, Denny got in a HUGE jam, but was able to get out of it

6 losses in-a-row, not too much fun....
~ and three straight series losses - eek!
~ Yuni popping up -ON THE FIRST PITCH- with the bases loaded - argh!
~ Adrian with TWO errors - ugh!
~ Something seems wrong with Felix - yikes!

G29 | that's it - no more 2 game series!

M's 1 | Royals 3

Jarrod super solid again. And, again, it is all for naught.

4's...

  • 4 consecutive losses ~ longest streak of the season (hey, it's less than the Yanks ;-)
  • 4 total scored runs ~ in the last three games (on 21 hits)
  • 4 total pitchers used ~ in the last 2 games (compared to 8 used in Sunday's marathon)

Here's hoping the bats wake up in Minny.

G28 | Cy Ponson vs. (sigh) Silva

AP Photo/Charlie Riedel

M's 1 | Royals 9

Didn't see it.

Didn't hear it.

Thank heavens for work and the Pacific Time Zone ;-)

Here's the thing...
Pitching has been the strength of this team so far, when that goes AND the hitting sucks, there's not a lot to be rosy about.
Nine hits should net more than one run.

Semi-bright spots...

~ After a little shaky start, Olson did a nice job spelling the pen that was in desperate need of being spelled.

~ Junior back in the line-up, seemingly healthy, had a double and a walk

Not gonna dwell.

First losing homstand proves exciting but costly | Home Highlights

.
A's and R's (2-3)

ROSY RAPTURE

A+ for excitement...
~ 4 out of 5 games decided by one run
~ wins in the 9th are fun (especially when the winning run scores on a single after a 14 pitch AB)
~ wins in the 15th are pretty exciting too (especially when the tie is broken three times!)

Some of the positive pitching numbers...
~ second best ERA in the AL (3.79)
~ fourth highest number of K's in the AL (184 - 14 above league avg)
~ fourth fewest number of BB's in the AL (86 - 7 below league avg)

Some of the positive batting numbers...
~ leading the AL in BA w/RISP (.312)
~ second lowest strikeout total in the AL (148 - 29 below league avg)

PALLID PONDERINGS

Bats need to get a little battier...
~ 25 runs isn't bad, but just a couple more runs and it's easily a 4-1 home stand As for the pitching
~ third lowest BA in the AL (.261)
~ last in the AL in BB (73 - 24 below league avg)

DL stints all too common...
See previous post - let it not be a trend

color me perplexed...
~ Jarrod and Erik have AWESOME outings each going 7IP w/ at least 6 K's and only 1ER) yet in both cases the team came away with the loss
~ Silva, Jaku and Felix all struggled in varying degrees from mightily to just not quite right, yet the team won 2 of those games

Let it not be a trend....

Between recent DL stints for Roy Corcoran (neck), Brandon Morrow (bicep) and Shawn Kelley (oblique) and illnesses of Jarrod (flu), Felix (flu) and Junior (diverticulitis) the 25-man roster is starting to resemble a hospital wing. And those who are those who aren't hurt are still just a bit tuckered from the little15-inning affair (in which every BP arm was used).

Here's what Shannon's said of the situation...
Wak called the loss of Kelley to the pen "devastating." Everything in the pen had been pushed back with the loss of Morrow and Kelley's emergence was crucial in that equation. He is a legitimate 8th inning guy.

Could be devastating to the team too as they have been relying on pitching. The pen has taken several hits but this one may prove to be too much (no word on who will be coming up). Jakabauskas, to the rotation for RRS. Corcoran out with a neck strain. Morrow out, not 100 percent with the forearm tendinitis. Not only has there been turnover, but the pen is spent right now also.

I do not know how David Aardsma got through the 9th and I am stunned that he was throwing 97. Aardsma pitched or was up and hot in the pen every game of this homestand.

Denny Stark, tough to watch but gamely available on his third straight day. Sean White and Miguel Batista were not. The team does not have a day off until Monday.

If ever there was a time for Carlos to step up (and Jarrod to keep on keepin' on) THIS would be it.

G27 | first time spittin' bristles

.
M's 2 | Rangers 7

So much for the one-run games.

Padilla was on cruise-control nearly all of his eight innings of work...
He faced the minimum through four, gave up only one hit (to Wlad in the 5th) and his only slight rough patch was in the 6th when the M's lone run scored via a hit batsman, a walk and an error.

Erik wasn't nearly as stingy with the hits...
But, he also only surrendered one run (a Cruz HR in the 7th) Seven appeared to be Erik's number today ... 7IP - 7H - 7K (but ZERO walks)

In 'regulation' the BP was it's usual stellar-self ...
Giving up only a couple of hits and a walk but no runs (and Wladdy with an outfield assist to home plate!). After nine, the story was one to one.

Then in extra frames, the bad dream that had been the silent bats turned to a nightmare on the mound....

After his third pitch to the first batter in the 10th, Shawn Kelley hit the ground as if he'd been shot (he would come out of the game with what we would later learn was a strained oblique - likely to the DL).

Enter Denny Stark who proceeded to get that batter to line out and the next to fly out. Then, it really fell apart - six runs would score (including a grand slam by "Salty") before the third out was recorded. Poor Denny :-(

The M's bats tried to rally in the bottom of the inning...

Back-to-back doubles, scored one run, but that was all she wrote.

Here's hoping Shawn's oblique heals fast and well (but those can be kinda stubborn) and that Brandon is really ready to come back this weekend in Minny, cuz the between the 15-inning affair and now the injury - the bullpen's looking a bit tattered.

KC for the next two - at least they get to miss Cy-Zack :-)

G26 | another one-run game

AP Photo/Elaine Thompson

M's 5 | Rangers 6

Unfortunately, the M's were on the lesser side of that ledger tonight.

I didn't get to see the game, so can't offer more than what I just now heard in Wak's post game comments...
  • Felix had the flu - had good stuff, not great command (though he did K 9)
  • Millwood, in the early innings, was as good as he's ever seen him
  • Proud of the character of the club as they battled back, again
  • Great job by Sean and Denny out of the pen
  • Thought Kenji was safe ;-)
Looking at the box score....
the thing that strikes me (other than the whole 4th one-run game in-a-row) was...

Yuni walked!!

In the 9th inning, with two outs no less!

G25 | hey, we got a lefty in the pen :-)

(updated at 9:39PM)

M's 8 | A's 7
(in 15)

And whadayaknow? He gets the improbable win...
by pitching in the 13th, 14th and 15th! Yes, Jason Vargas was thrown into the fire that was Safeco Field on Sunday afternoon. And, he not only survived, he thrived. He struck out the first three batters he faced and would go on to allow one walk, two singles, two fly-outs and strike out one more batter before his work was done as he was awarded the "W".

Flashback (to the regulation innings)...
The game didn't begin as lovely as the afternoon was. Jaku, who has run very hot and very cold so far this season, started out on his cold side, allowing three runs in the first. He settled down for a couple of innings, and the M's got within one on Mike Sweeney's first homerun as a Mariner (also the 200th for his career). But then Jaku started to struggle again and the A's plated another run in the 5th and in came the calvary... before it was all said and done, every bp pitcher would take the mound (and soon they would be looking for volunteers from the bench).

The relievers (on both sides) would hold serve until Ichiro singled Wlad home in the 7th to get the M's back within one. And then, in the 9th Kenji would deliver the blow, a solo shot into the visiting bullpen to tie it up. Immediately, Franklin pushed a bunt do the 1st base line for a hit and Yuni singled, but an Ichiro strikeout and a Jose ground out (he couldn't quite get it done vs. Springer, like Friday night) would stifle the rally.

The 'extries'...
Through the next three innings, no batter reached further than first. Then, what appeared to be disaster struck in the 13th when the wheels fell off for Miggy and he allowed three runs to score and was only able to record two outs (that's when Vargas came in).

"You just never know."....
That's what Blowers said to Sims on the TV broadcast after Adrian got a lead off base hit in the bottom of the13th. After a couple more singles, a couple of walks and a fielder's choice - the M's had tied it up AGAIN.

In the bottom of the 15th...

A's reliever Gonzalez (who had thrown 108 pitches!!!) was relieved by starter Eveland who promptly gave up a single, FC, made an error himself, IBB'd Ichiro and gave up the winning bloop hit to ~ none other than Friday night's hero ~ Jose Lopez!

Whew!! Glad it was at home, so at least the guys can sleep in their own beds after what must have been an extremely exhausting day ~ 'specially for the bp guys ~ yowsa!

M's 2 | A's 3

Clearly two aggressive teams competed tonight...
and the 'phants won in every aspect, including the only one that really matters, the final score.

SB = M's 0 | A's 2
CS = M's 2 | A's 1
Plays at the plate = M's OUT in the 3rd | A's SAFE in the 9th

oh yeah ... and there was that little shift that was beaten ;-)

The rosy side was...
Jarrod totally back on track after his rough outing in Anaheim.

Same old, same old...
Jarrod getting almost zero run support.

Tip o' the Cap...
to A's pitching and smart base-running.

p.s. M's now double digits in the loss column (only four other teams left)

G23 | 9th inning victories are FUN

AP

M's 8 | A's 7

Especially in person :-)
Talk about "edge of your seat" time - literally!

Tied at 7 going into the bottom of the ninth...
There were two outs and the bases had been loaded via a single, walk and intentional walk. To the plate comes Jose Lopez. I was feeling pretty confident (Lopey IS the RBI leader on the club after all) and the Skipper agreed...
"With what he did last year driving in 90 runs or so (89 actually), you feel pretty good about that guy being up there," manager Don Wakamatsu said of Lopez. "He's going to give you a good at-bat in that situation."
Little did we realize what an epic at-bat Jose would induce. With his teammates, to a man, lined up along the dugout rail...
Lopez watched two balls, then he watched two strikes, both of which seemed borderline.

Then began as titanic a struggle as can be seen on the first of May as Springer kept throwing strikes and Lopez kept fouling them off.

"I just don't want to take a pitch for a strike," Lopez said.

He fouled off the first one down the third-base line.

Then he fouled off four in a row into the stands behind him.

Then another down the third-base line.

Then another down the left-field line.

Then another into the screen behind home plate.

Then another into the third deck down the right-field line.

"I don't know what's going on with my bat," Lopez said, insisting he was hoping to hit each one somewhere fair. "A lot of fouls with my bat."

Then, finally, he found a cut fastball he could handle and lined it to right-center, scoring Chavez and sending a heretofore tense Mariners dugout into a happy frenzy.

On the field, there was only jubilation...
Gone were the woes of yet another Silva start, the frustration of walk-after-walk given up by M's arms (7 all total) and the disappointment of UW product Shaun White being the last bullpen guy to have an ERA (his 0.00ERA in 6.1IP was spoiled by a Holliday home run to tie the game at 7 in the 7th). It was all good...
"You feel good when a guy tends to see that many pitches, and battled and then to be able to go to right-center and stay with that pitch was outstanding," Seattle manager Don Wakamatsu said. "That was quite a way to win that ballgame."
Indeed it was, Skip. Indeed it was.

Not only that...
It seems that the Jose's tenacity in that last AB is a bit of a microcosm of the M's season so far. For the most part, with each game they lose they learn and with each game they win they build upon the confidence in their competence. If they can continue on that path, it just may lead to something pretty special.
