A stat just caught my eye ...
The M's starting pitchers have 51 quality starts that have equated to all of 34 wins.
Kudos to Andy, a rare bird that's getting better with age.
Rosy, what are you feeling about the Cliff Lee situation? There's a LOT of angst at LoHud over potentially losing Jesus Montero....

To me, you can NEVER have too much pitching! I get that Montero is a very highly touted prospect (and, for the M's sake -if this goes through- I hope he lives up to that touting) but his is just that - a PROSPECT. While there is no such a thing as a "sure thing" ... Cliff is as close as it gets.
I think this goes down as helping both teams. Yanks get Lee, bolsters the rotation, now, before Mo and Po and Jeet and Al and Andy all obsolesce. Yanks can then spin Vazquez into another bat or another bullpen arm [both?]; or, my fave - put Young Master Philip back in the pen = bolsters the pen and keeps his innings low enough.
ReplyDeleteMariners get Jesus Montero. The bat is pretty much unquestioned [Miggy Cabrera?] and while the glove IS questioned, he has made strides back there. Yanks have Kevin Romine in AA, better glove and still a promising hitter. Yanks have Gary Sanchez down at GCL, who some say is a young Montero [plus, JR Murphy]. Spare part, impacts the farther future.
Mariners get David Adams at 2B. Decent glove, good line drive hitter. Yanks already have Robi Cano for the near and somewhat distant future, and Corban Joseph a year behind Adams. Spare part.
Third guy.... I have heard maybe Zach McAllister. SP, projects to a 4 or 5 starter. Pretty much interchangeable with a flock of guys at SWB and Trenton. Spare part.
Three spare parts in Yankeeland, possibly three big league assets for Seattle. Meantime, a lockdown rotation for the Bombers. I'm happy.
BTW, my boy, Kevin, is a Mariners fan. :-)

ReplyDeleteJustin Smoak is going to be a player. I'm not sure about the other three, but Texas' farm system is very deep and I guess they figured they'd take a shot this year (even though Lee will probably leave).

Really sorry to see Lowe go (even though he just had surgery) he helped stablized that pen whenever he was healthy...
I think both teams did themselves a favor here.
ReplyDeleteSmoak can HIT. Sure, he'll probably strike out 130-150 times next year, but probably hit around 32 homers, as well.
It doesn't really help them blowing games against the O's, but Lee gives the Rangers at least a chance of getting a championship.
About a 10% chance he re-signs with them, but it's worth it.
Maybe he'll go back to the M's next year like Branyan!
