Branyan's swing had been fine the past few days, while his running was taking its time rounding back into form. But whether it was Branyan at the plate, or on the basepaths, his presence appeared to jump-start a Mariners offense that had gone missing in action the previous seven days.

"That was the last thing to come, running at full speed," Branyan said after his homer and double helped ignite a 17-hit attack by the Mariners. "I don't know why. You would think swinging a bat puts more stress on your back than running. But I went out early today and ran some and ran probably 50 or 60 percent. And then when I was running the bases, I didn't even think about it and felt fine all night."
