G2 | all was rosy ~ until that elusive 3rd out in the 9th

M's 5 | Twins 6

There were SO many great things in this ballgame ~ it's hard to believe they lost :-(

EriKKKKKKKK

He appeared to be the pitcher everyone thought he was. He was absolutely dominant, allowing only two singles through four (and at one point, retiring 10 -in-row) and recording five strikeouts. It was looking like Erik would cruise to his first ever win against the Twins (the only AL club he has beat) but then came the 5th. Despite eventually striking out the side, a lead-off triple, a hit batsman, a steal and a couple singles were enough to get three Twins runs on the board.

Endy is certainly filling in well for Ichiro ... 3 more hits and 2rbi tonight. Joh, Jr and Jose the were the only batters w/o hits, althought they did combine for 3 BB

no dp's

But the defense was solid including an awesome snare by Yuni ~ definite WebGem!

bullpen
Roy and David combined for 3.0 scoreless, hitless innings with 3 strikeouts and all was looking splendid ... then came the ninth. Brandon recorded 2 fairly quick outs (and was hitting 97 on the gun) and then walked the bases loaded. Miggy came in after Brandon was gassed from throwing so many pitches and promptly gave up two singles, the lead and the game.

  1. that was absolutely brutal!

    3 walks in a row is never good, but neither is bring in batista!

    I bet the fans are pretty mad at wakamatsu now!

  2. Actually no - it's the second game of 162 for pete's sake.

    Granted, there may have been better options than Miggy in that situation, but the fact is, "the situation" happened pretty quickly. In the long term, I think Wak is going to be great, he'll learn what his guys can and can't do.

    btw - just found this little blurb on Shannon's blog...

    ~~~I saw an interesting sight as I was stepping into a cab after the post game show tonight. Wak, Wetteland and Morrow walking across the street together to catch a cab. What was said, I have no idea but I have heard similar stories, namely from Carlos Silva.
    When Silva had his disastrous start against the Angels this spring he was sitting on the bus when he had an unexpected visitor. "I was thinking about the game on the bus," he told me, "and then I felt someone sit down next to me and it was him. He was talking to me and he made me feel so good. He said, you are a part of this team we trust you, that's why you are here. Great words." Wak went on to tell Carlos that it is important that he pitch with his mind and not his heart. That is a blog for a later date. The point is, Wak personally shows support for his players. It is not just lip service to the media. He is there for his guys. When Silva threw his bullpen two days later, Wak came over and sat in for the whole thing, again emphasizing pitching with his mind. It would be easy to turn a pitching problem over to a pitching coach, but that is not Wak's style.
    Brandon will get the same support.~~~
  4. You are right about Silva :-)
    Junior looked great last night - 1st helped "manufacture" a run and then did it the "easy" way ;-) his 8th Opening Day homer. Tonight he was o'fer, but walked a couple of times. The main thing with Jr, by all accounts anyway, is his presence in the clubhouse. Everyone is talking up how he and Sweeney are really great mentors for the young (and even some of the "not so young" guys.
    Hey - CONGRATS vs. the HALOS!!
    Your guys went ahead shortly after someone posted about Brandon's blown save ;-)
  6. You always hear about Sweeney and Sean Casey being the nicest guys in the league.
    The a's should have beat them by more. 16 hits, a bunch of line outs, but holliday wasn't there, so, you have to take it. Decent start by cahill and good work from wuertz and casilla.
    That's weird, I'm looking up some players stats on the mlb page for the mariners and it's showing all the angel stats! I just wanted to check miguel batistas stats.
